Learning Resources

There are lots of great evidence-based medicine (EBM) resources online, but the Oxford CEBM tools bring a lot of tools together in one convenient place. These tools are for every step of the EBM process, and many of these can be applied to a wide range of clinical problems.

Who is it aimed at?

I get the impression that whilst the tools on this site are primarily aimed at helping clinicians practice EBM, they also make great learning tools for students. You can apply them to a clinical problem of interest, or one seen on a clinical placement. There is quite a lot there, so to work through every tool individually may take some time, but they can also be used on their own.

My Opinion:

What I liked about them was that the tools are organised by step of the EBM process, and though a lot of the pages are more walk-throughs, with some tools, I think it’d make a great introduction to EBM and make it really easy to practice EBM by following the guidance available there.  I particularly liked the different sheets for critical appraisal of different study types as a quick and easy way of appraising studies. The rational checklist-with-explanation approach to appraisal makes it great for beginners.

If you are new to EBM and want to give it a try, there is lots of guidance in the CEBM tools that can help you on your way. I think that after a few tries with some of the tools, such as the critical appraisal checklists, you might be able to try without, but even for experienced EBM users, they could be a useful refresher.
